A Guide to Finding the Right Pole Studio

Whether you are beginning your pole dancing journey, visiting a city for the week or weekend, or looking to find a new pole home after moving for the millionth time like me, choosing the right pole studio is crucial to ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and fulfilling experience.

In this guide, we’ll explore key factors to consider (in no particular order) when selecting the perfect pole studio that aligns with your preferences and priorities.

Cleanliness and Safety

Cleanliness and safety are necessary for any fitness environment, and as intimate as pole studios are, this factor should not be optional. Before committing to a studio, take the time to visit and assess its cleanliness. Look for well-maintained equipment, spotless floors, and clean common areas. Ensure that the studio has a comprehensive safety protocol in place, including proper warm-up routines, first aid availability, and emergency procedures because sh*t happens. Better safe than sorry. A clean, safe environment is the foundation for a positive, worry-free pole dancing experience.

Accessibility

Accessibility is a key factor that often gets missed, and in traffic-heavy places like Atlanta, New York, the DMV, and sometimes Houston, you don’t want to overlook the ease of getting to a studio. Choose a studio that is conveniently located and easily accessible by public transportation or car. Consider the class schedule and how well it aligns with your availability AND regular traffic patterns. A studio with flexible hours and a schedule that accommodates your lifestyle ensures that you can maintain consistency.

Trained Instructors

Not everyone who is a great pole dancer should teach pole.

Teaching is an art form in itself. The expertise of the instructors is a critical aspect of your pole dancing journey and safety. Ensure that the studio employs certified and experienced instructors who are well-versed in pole dancing techniques, anatomy, and injury prevention. A studio gets double points in my book if it requires ongoing credentialing or training to ensure instructors are current on the latest in the industry. Trained instructors contribute to a safer environment and enhance the experience by providing guidance, corrections, and encouragement.

Diverse Set of Classes

Since no two pole dancers are the same, the classes a studio offers should be different, too.

A quality pole studio should offer diverse classes for various skill levels and interests. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced pole dancer, having access to classes that align with your current level and allow for progression is essential. Look for studios that offer a little bit of everything you need to be successful: technique, choreography, flexibility, etc.. Variety ensures that you stay engaged and motivated in your pole dancing journey.

Clear Procedures and Pricing

Pole is a niche fitness category. They say you get what you pay for, so ensure you understand what you’re signing up for. Transparency in studio procedures and pricing helps create a positive experience for everyone. Before committing to a studio, review their policies on class cancellations, membership options, drop-in classes, and workshop fees. A studio with clear communication and straightforward procedures builds trust and reliability.

Vibes

The above guidelines can be found by reading the studio website or touring the studio, but what must be experienced to know if a studio is the right fit for you is the vibes.

Pay attention to the studio’s ambiance, community spirit, and the attitude of both instructors and fellow students. A positive and supportive environment can make your pole dancing journey physically rewarding and emotionally uplifting. Consider attending a trial class, reaching out to current members, or attending a showcase to get a feel for the studio’s vibes.

No two pole studios are created equally which is a huge part to me in what makes the pole community so beautifully dynamic. Finding the right pole studio for you requires thoughtful consideration of various factors, from cleanliness and safety to the overall atmosphere.

Prioritize what YOU need and lean into YOUR why for pole dancing to choose a studio that aligns with where you want to surround your energy and how you want to grow. Remember, the right studio is not just a place to learn; it’s a community that supports and empowers you on your journey.
