An Interview with Samantha Star
PoleCon workshop leader and performer, hand balancing enthusiast and cat lover—we sat down to talk with the handstand queen, Samantha Star.
Mica: How many times a week do you exercise?
Sam: 6-7 days a week. Usually take a full rest day once every two weeks, but have one easier day of movement on the other week.
Mica: When did you start taking pole more seriously?
Sam: Started teaching and competing pole in 2012
Mica: When was your first performance?
Sam: First competition was MIdwest 2012
Mica: What is your current pole nemesis?
Sam: Janeiro
Mica: What is your favorite pole move?
Sam: Fonji
Mica: Where/who do you get your inspiration from?
Sam: Instagram, Follow interesting polers, movers, handstanders and yogi’s
Mica: What training regimens/Diets do you have?
Sam: Start with a morning routine of stretching, and warming up for the day, including planks, and handstands, Eat fairly healthy, make breakfast every day. Tend to snack most of the day and not eat big meals. Try to avoid foods that make me feel heavy and eat foods that make me feel good.
Mica: What competition are you currently training for?
Sam: IPSF Worlds – July 25/26 in London
Mica: What tips would you give to a student that wants to start doing handstands?
Sam: Get obsessed. Practice every day.
