Tricks for Managing Long Hair When Pole Dancing
27 million Americans have hair that is longer than their shoulders, and nearly 900,000 people have their locks flowing down to their waist. If you have long hair, just like with any form of fitness exercise, it can sometimes be problematic when you are pole dancing. Not only will you be working with gravity, but dependent on your hair type, it moves in different ways whilst you are dancing. So before you hit the heights on your pole, it is important that you style your long hair first, because tangled tresses can get in the way of your movement and hinder twists and turns.
Choreographing hair
There are extremely experienced pole dancers that successfully do their routines with the long hair down, like Anastasia Skukhtorova. Anastasia actually choreographs hair flips into her routine to showcase her silky, long locks. If you choose to keep your hair loose when on the pole, remember that the quicker the hair flip, the faster your hair will be out of your face. Exaggerate a hair flip even more by moving your chin in the same direction. It also helps to use your forearm to move your hair out of the way. Swoops and pirouettes in between flips will even help your long hair have even more momentum. Just make sure that you are careful about the distance between the pole and your head – you certainly don’t want to grab the pole along with a handful of hair.
Beautiful braids
If you want to show off the length of your hair, but still have it beautifully under control, then braids are the way forward. Rather than taking a braid from the base of your head though, go for two reverse French plaits that are taking right from the top of the hair line. This works especially well if you have very thick hair that is wavy or curly. When you are styling your hair, try and avoid using hairsprays or products that contain harmful chemicals. If you are regularly pole dancing, you should consider choosing environmentally-friendly products and shampoos that won’t damage your hair or strip your hair of its natural properties.
All about the buns
If you want to make sure that your hair is completely out of the way when you are pole dancing, then a bun is often the best solution. You don’t have to opt for the traditional bun that is centered at the back of your head though. A high ballet dancer style bun is extremely popular, especially made up of one long braid. You could even go unconventional and have two buns in a Princess Leia style on either side of your head.
If you are relatively new to pole dancing, it is certainly beneficial to tie your long hair back so that it doesn’t get in the way of your moves. For more experienced dancers, you can work your long hair into your routine with some great choreography.
